Self-care Challenge- Day 20: Declutter

One of the best things you can do for your mental health is taking some time to clear your space.

Clutter can impact your brain’s performance by contributing to visual distractions. This can overload your mind and affect working memory. Working memory is a short-term memory process in our brains that is used to process new information so that we can understand and utilize it. It’s also essential for daily tasks.

Studies have also shown that if your working or living space is cluttered, it can increase feelings of anxiety. A cluttered space constantly attacks the mind with visual stimuli. Clutter can make people irritable and distracted. Living in a cluttered space can also bring on feelings of hopelessness and depression, which then makes it even harder to pick things up and the cycle continues.

Today, I invite you to pick a small area of your space to declutter and organize. Set a timer for 5 minutes and put on your favorite song. After 5 minutes, reevaluate how you feel and if you feel good, keep going. If it isn’t serving you, try again another time. Even trying to organize can help increase your feelings of self-worth because you’re taking care of yourself.

That’s the ultimate goal: being able to take care of ourselves.
