For many of us, one of the hardest things to do is forgive others. What we don’t realize, however, is if we’re stuck in a cycle of anger or resentment, we are giving that person some control over our lives. If we hold on to whatever we feel hurt us, it’s like swallowing poison and hoping that the other person gets sick. Staying in a state of anger or being triggered by thoughts of the person can put your body into fight-or-flight mode- aka: the stress response.
In the stress response, our bodies feel that we’re in danger and get it ready to handle the oncoming stressor. This includes raising our blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate, and changing our metabolism and immune system. Staying in this state for long periods of time increase the risk of depression, heart disease, and other illnesses.

Forgiving someone can be healthy. By forgiving, we free ourselves from the constant state of stress and open up space for healing. Some benefits of forgiveness are:
- Healthier, more stable relationships
- Improved mental health
- Lower levels of stress and anxiety
- Fewer symptoms of depression
- Lower blood pressure
- A stronger immune system
- Improved heart health
- Improved self-esteem
- Starts the healing process
- Brings you a feeling of peace
While forgiving someone might not be easy, it can be one of the greatest gifts we give to ourselves.
