Internship Day 2- Youth Weight Training

I had my second day on Wednesday (it’s Friday today). Still a good day but it was rough. Had class in the morning. Total Body Strength still kicked my butt. Yoga/Pilates was awesome. It was a little later that it got a little difficult.

One of the classes I was assisting with was Youth Weight Training. Weight training is one of my favorite ways to workout. I helped on Monday as well and thought today was going to go super smooth since Monday was really good.

I was wrong.

We started with some kickball in a field near the community center. They got into it and a little rowdy. At the end, one of the students told another that they should unalive themselves.

These are kids. 11 years old to maybe 14 years old? Most are on the younger side.

When we went inside, the instructor I was assisting sat them down and had a talk.

I wish kids realized how harmful their words can be. At that age, we don’t know any better. I realize that. But it goes both ways. The person saying them doesn’t realize how traumatizing those words can be. The person they’re directed at doesn’t realize the person saying those words most likely doesn’t mean it. They’re angry. Frustrated. And at that age, have no idea how to direct that energy. It doesn’t excuse the behavior. It’s awful behavior.

But also, please don’t unalive yourself.

I hope that child knows not everyone is cruel. I hope that child knows their life means something. I hope that child knows we want him with us.
