I officially started my summer internship today. I’m part of the Diversify Internship cohort at one of the parks and rec districts here in the Portland area. As an Exercise Science student, I will be helping out the fitness and recreation crew.
Today, I joined in two classes: Total Body Strength and Yoga/Mat Pilates. And in the afternoon, I assisted with the Youth Weight Training camp. I had so much fun. I can’t wait to go back on Wednesday.

Something I struggled with today, however, is feeling like I don’t really belong there. Living in a bigger body and entering the fitness space as a professional seems contradictory to one another. Who is going to want to learn from me when my outward appearance may not convey my love for movement and wellness? Are people judging me based on my size and not my knowledge?
I’m trying to focus on learning as much as I can instead of hypothetical scenarios that may or may not be what’s actually happening. I’m having fun and am happiest when I’m moving my body. That’s what counts.

My family and I celebrated my first day by getting dinner out. Gabriel and I picked ramen. It was comforting and the perfect meal to celebrate.
