To me, wellness is a blend of physical and mental well-being. It’s about thriving, not just surviving. While some people conflate spiritual wellness for religious beliefs, I believe spirituality can exist independently of religion. Real wellness incorporates all aspects: physical, mental, emotional, social, and even spiritual. While each of these dimensions are important, social wellness is often overlooked. Without meaningful human connections, we can feel isolated and lonely. These feelings have adverse effects on our emotional and mental health. This impacts our physical health. And, regardless of how strong someone is spiritually, struggling in the other dimensions can have damaging consequences. We need to cultivate support systems and social networks in our personal lives. Creating these connections are essential for holistic wellness.

As a mom, my daily wellness practices are often about small victories. Taking my anti-anxiety medication every morning is a small moment of self-care that I validate with a mental high-five. Movement is another vital component of my wellness routine. Whether it’s a full workout, a walk, dancing, or simply standing up after hours at my desk, moving my body energizes me. Also, I find creative activities extremely valuable. Doodling, painting, or working on a full illustration… these creative outlets remind me that there’s more to life than just “the grind.”
Focusing on my wellness has transformed my life. I used to neglect myself, running myself into the ground with work and family responsibilities. Prioritizing my well-being has reduced my stress levels, making life feel less hectic and more manageable. One pivotal moment was quitting a toxic job in August 2023. The job had become unbearable, and leaving it felt like a massive weight off my shoulders. Surprisingly, my heart palpitations, which I had attributed to chronic anxiety, completely stopped. This reaffirmed the importance of making my own wellness a priority.

Despite the progress I’ve made in my own wellness journey, I still struggle with certain aspects of my own health and well-being. Physically, losing body fat has been tough, despite loving movement and working out. Consistency is key, and I’ve struggled with maintaining it lately. However, I know I can get back to where I was before if I persist. My motivation comes from within; I feel better, more energetic, and more confident when I focus on my wellness. As Alexandra Elle said, “The path to self-love isn’t linear. Be patient with yourself.” This quote inspires me to stay committed to my wellness journey, knowing that every step forward, no matter how small, is progress.
